July has been very, very busy, as we've had lots of Steve's extended family come and visit throughout the month. It's been great to visit with everybody, and the kids have had a wonderful time playing together with the cousins. We've had lots of yummy dinners, and even a dessert or two (or 20...but who's counting?).
The quadruple-layer cake was for Steve's mom's birthday. I discovered the hard way that it's a lot easier to accurately slice cake layers in half when they are not frozen. It's a long story, but basically I ended up freezing the unsliced cake layers when the party date got changed, then I didn't take the cake out of the freezer soon enough to easily slice the layers before putting it all together. It's not hard to cut a little bit off a frozen cake when your knife is slicing down vertically and you only have to cut an inch or two down. It's a whole different ballgame when you're slicing horizontally through an 8 inch layer of rock hard cake. Normally I use that handy wire doohicky to cut accurately through the cake layer, but that wasn't an option with a frozen cake.
Anyway, I eventually prevailed with only a minor battle wound (I cut my finger a little bit when the serrated knife slipped. How embarrassing) and it (the cake, not the battle wound) was all gone in a matter of minutes.
I love your cakes!!
